System Software Engineer (m/f/d) Internship/Master Thesis

Intern / Student, Full or part-time · München

Your mission
As part of our Systems Engineering team in Munich, Germany, you will contribute to the development and integration of spacecraft systems for an upcoming In-Orbit Refueling Demonstration mission. This role provides hands-on experience in defining the operational architecture of the payload. This includes operational concepts, state-machine development, and system-level logic, while working closely with a multidisciplinary team. The position is planned for a duration of 6 months, with the possibility of extension. We also offer the opportunity to convert the work into a Master’s thesis, with the exact topic tailored to the candidate’s interests and strengths.

Your role will include:
  • Define payload operational concepts across all mission phases.
  • Develop the payload state-machine including fault modes and safe mode transitions.
  • Support requirements management, interface definition, and system budgets.
  • Contribute to FMECA and failure-handling logic.
  • Develop test procedures for operational modes and mission simulation support.
  • Prepare operations documentation and mission timelines.
  • Support creation of autonomy rules and mode transition constraints.
  • Assist in ground segment readiness preparations.
Your profile
  • Enrolled in a Master’s or advanced Bachelor’s student in in Aerospace, Systems Engineering, or related fields.
  • Understanding of system engineering concepts for space (mission phases, ConOps, Safe Mode, FDIR).
  • Basic knowledge of fluidic systems and two-phase fluid physics.
  • Familiarity with state-machine tools (Matlab, Simulink Stateflow).
  • Strong analytical and documentation skills.
We offer
  • Immediate and flexible start
  • 30 days annual vacation and flexible working hours
  • Potential for a Master’s project and/or full-time employment afterwards
